Opportunities 11th May 2017 Arts and Culture Trust

UJ Arts & Culture, supported by Wordfest and the National Arts Festival, is excited to announce their call for new scripts. Playwrights and theatre-makers; can you deliver a captivating narrative in 2 minutes, or less?

SA Shorts II #2minutenoodles is looking for 2-minute (max) play scripts. The selected short-listed scripts will be presented for a live reading at Wordfest, which forms part of The National Arts Festival (Grahamstown) 2017 programme; scripts will be assessed by a panel of industry experts and selected scripts will move through to the publication and production process planned for 2018. The production may premiere at the 2018 National Arts Festival accompanied by a publication of these 24 new scripts.

The genesis of SA Shorts II #2minutenoodles is SA Shorts: quickies for a microwave generation compiled and originally directed for UJ Arts & Culture by Alby Michaels in 2012 and Short, Sharp & Snappy 1 and 2 (2011) compiled by Robin Malan and Colleen Moroukian, the latter publications aimed specifically at high schools and published through the inspired independent press, Junkets Publishers. #2minutenoodles is set to amuse and to intrigue, creating an exciting platform for new, emerging and established South African and Pan-African playwrights without the pressure of commercial constraints or the box office bottom line. The criteria of the #2minutenoodle is that the work must be predominately in English though some vernacular will be allowed, and may not be longer than 120 seconds, i.e. 2 minutes. Furthermore, this noodle should be a stand-alone piece and must have its own build and crises. To resolve or not – is up to you! The theme for 2017 is – Time.
